Have you set your goals for 2024?

I have this undeniable feeling that 2024 is going to be an exceptional year. Hopefully, like me, you’ve come back from your break feeling refreshed and recharged. Now is the time to set yourself some goals for the year ahead and put a plan together to achieve them. Whether you’re a business owner or an employee, you can follow the same process to help set your goal and plan.

Here are some tips to help you:

1.      Be realistic

Don’t set yourself up for failure from the outset by setting goals that are too big or unachievable. I love to think big and am a ‘glass half full’ kind of girl, but I’m also a realist. Spend some time really thinking through what you want to achieve this year, and what it will mean to you and your life if you do.

2.      Set goals in bite size pieces

If your goal is to get a new job this year, set smaller goals to help you achieve them, like learning new skills which will be relevant in your new job, or building your network. As humans we are motivated by results, so set some incremental goals to help achieve your longer-term goals.

3.      Include specific timelines and milestones

I love a good plan (note: I will spreadsheet just about anything) and one of the keys is having measures to track your success and keep you moving. So, make sure you set some timelines which will challenge you but are also achievable, and make sure you stick to them.

4.      Make your goals visible

I’ve worked with a number of clients on accountability coaching, and it’s very effective. Share your goals with colleagues, friends, your mentor, partner, or someone who will help keep you accountable. I print my goals and have them on a board in my office so I am reminded every day what I am working to achieve.

5.      Reward yourself

I work with a very successful rewards and recognition client (Hat tip to @Mercedes Ibbett at EVT Incentive) and they have tonnes of evidence and data around how effective rewards are in helping companies and employees achieve their goals. So, think of some small and large rewards that will help to motivate you as you achieve the milestones you’ve set yourself.

Set your goals now, and implement steps you need to take to start achieving them. Use the fresh energy you’re bringing in from the holiday break to get the year off to a great start!
